Endowed Scholarships

Established by Major General Dr. George A. Alexander, Class of 1977, in memory of his father, Dr. Leslie L. Alexander, Class of 1952, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior medical student who has excelled academically and demonstrated an interest in radiation oncology or diagnostic radiology.

This scholarship honors Dr. William Alexander Miles and his wife, Dr. Eleanor Henry Miles, both Class of 1955. It is awarded to a deserving second-year HUCM student who has experienced economic hardship due to limited financial resources or the sudden onset of a physical, mental, or emotional disability.

Founded through a gift from the Janet Harmon Bragg and Summer Allen Bragg Foundation, this scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving African American students.

This scholarship is awarded to a student with an interest in obstetrics and gynecology in memory of Dr. Reynold E. Burch, Class of 1942. Preference is given to students born and raised in Maine or New Jersey.

Established through a gift from the estate of Dr. William A. Cleland, Class of 1933, this scholarship is awarded to a student with an interest in pediatric medicine. Preference is given to students from North Carolina.

Established by Dr. Anthony A. Clemendor, Class of 1963, and his wife, Mrs. Janat Clemendor, this scholarship is awarded to a third-year African American student interested in obstetrics and gynecology who has financial need.

Established by Dr. George F. Cohen Jr., Class of 1977, this scholarship is awarded to a student with financial need who is in the top 50% of the class. Preference is given to an African American student.

Established by George F. Cohen Jr., MD, Class of 1977, in memory of his parents, this scholarship is awarded to a male junior at HUCM from the Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area and/or a student in the top 25% of the class.

This scholarship is awarded to a female or male second-year medical student in the upper half of their class from Jacksonville, Florida, with an interest in Internal Medicine. If no eligible student from Jacksonville is available, preference is given to students from other cities in Florida.

Established by E. Monroe Crawford, MD, Class of 1962, in memory of his father, Dr. Monroe Crawford, Class of 1927, this scholarship gives preference to students from Mississippi.

Established by Dr. Eddie Lam, Class of 1990, this scholarship honors Dr. Louise Maxienne Dargans Fleming and is awarded to a student in whom HUMAA sees academic promise.

This scholarship honors Mrs. Alice Tompkins Davis, who served as Executive Director of HUMAA from 1982 to 1996. It is awarded to a deserving African American student from the District of Columbia who has excelled academically.

This scholarship honors Dr. T. Wilkins Davis, Class of 1945, an organizer and incorporator of HUMAA. It is awarded to an African American student in good standing who has demonstrated service to the community, HUCM, or HUMAA. Preference is given to students born or raised in Washington, D.C., North Carolina, or South Carolina.

Established by Dr. Robert L. DeWitty Jr. and Dr. Joel Stevens, both Class of 1972, in memory of their mothers, this scholarship is awarded to a third- or fourth-year student in good standing with financial need. Preference is given to students interested in a surgical specialty.

Established in honor of William L. Doss Jr., MD, Class of 1963, and Lucille E. Brown, this scholarship provides financial assistance to a student born in Michigan who is in good academic standing and has financial need.

Established by his family, this scholarship is awarded to a medical student with financial need who is in good standing, preferably in the top half of the class.

Established by Dr. Ronald L. Anderson, Class of 1968, and Dr. Beverly Anderson in honor of Titus Duncan, this scholarship is awarded to a third- or fourth-year African American student committed to addressing health disparities in underserved communities. Preference is given to graduates of Pine Forge Academy, Oakwood University, Columbia Union College, or Washington Adventist University.

Established by the late Dr. Lena F. Edwards, Class of 1924, this scholarship is awarded to an African American first-year female student from the District of Columbia who demonstrates financial need and intends to practice family medicine.

Established by the Faith in Him Foundation and Dr. Eddie Lam, this scholarship is awarded to a current full-time junior or senior in good academic standing with demonstrated merit or financial need. Leadership skills and campus or community involvement are preferred.

Established by Dr. Gordon C. Fraser, Class of 1964, in recognition of the training he received at HUCM, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving medical student.

Established in memory of Christine T. George by her son, Dr. Theodore R. George Jr., Class of 1960, this scholarship gives first preference to a medical student from Ohio and second preference to a student from the District of Columbia.

Established by Dr. Melvin D. Gerald, Class of 1970, and Dr. William E. Matory, Class of 1953, this scholarship gives preference to a third-year student in good standing who plans to practice family medicine.

Established by the family of Dr. Alwyn H. Granady, Class of 1954, this scholarship is awarded to a student in good standing who demonstrates high ethical and moral standards and has an interest in internal medicine.

Established by Dr. Oscar J. Jackson and Mrs. Norma J. Jackson, this scholarship is awarded to an African American student from an underserved and disadvantaged background who demonstrates good moral character, academic ability, and financial need.

Established in memory of Dr. King S. Jones, Class of 1925, this scholarship gives preference to students from Indiana.

Established by Mrs. Lynn G. Kapiloff in honor of Dr. Bernard K. Kapiloff, Class of 1945, this scholarship is awarded to a student with financial need and an interest in the practice of medicine.

Established in honor of Dr. Harold W. Korol, Class of 1961, and Iris S. Korol, this scholarship is awarded to an upper-class student with demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to a student interested in a surgical specialty.

Established by Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr., Class of 1952, this scholarship is awarded to third-year medical students who have expressed an interest in a surgical specialty.

Established by Raymond A. Lloyd, MD, Class of 1966, in memory of his parents, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student in the top 25% of the class who plans to pursue interests in politics and medicine. Preference is given to students born and raised in Jamaica or another Caribbean island.

Established by Dr. Omega C. Logan Silva, Class of 1967, in memory of her parents, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore student in good standing who lived in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area or North Carolina for at least 10 years before entering medical school.

Established by Dr. Kelvin Loh, Class of 1966, and Dr. Samuel Loh, Class of 1971, in honor of their parents, this scholarship is awarded to a current medical student with significant financial need who demonstrates the academic ability to remain in good scholastic standing.

Established by Dr. Robert L. MacDougall, Class of 1975, in appreciation for the opportunity afforded to him by HUCM, this scholarship is awarded to a student in good standing with financial need.

Established by Edward H. Mazique, MD, Class of 1976, in memory of his father, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior African American male medical student who demonstrates exceptional academic performance and a commitment to community leadership and service. Preference is given to students from Louisiana or Mississippi.

This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student in the top 25% of their class.

Established by Dr. O. Anthony Ogundipe, Class of 1987, this scholarship is intended for an international student who does not otherwise qualify for government-sponsored financial aid. If no student meets that criterion, it may be awarded to another student with significant financial need.

Established by Anthony C. Pickett, MD, Class of 1991, in memory of his parents, this scholarship is awarded to a high-achieving first-year student from California whose heritage and background foster continued ties to the African American community.

Established in memory of Dr. Charles A. Pinderhughes, this scholarship gives preference to an African American student whose academic achievement and research interests demonstrate potential to advance work connecting brain functioning and social behavior in psychiatry.

Established by Dr. and Mrs. Rivadeneira, this scholarship gives preference to third- or fourth-year students of Hispanic or Latino background who intend to pursue a surgical career.

Established by the children of Dr. Stanley R. Samms, this scholarship is awarded to a student with an interest in Internal Medicine. Preference is given to students from the Caribbean or Washington, D.C.

This scholarship is awarded to a student with an interest in Radiology.

Established in honor of Dr. Eugene C. Simms and Mrs. Mildred E. Simms, this scholarship gives preference to students from New York, South Carolina, Maryland, and California.

Established by Dr. Douglas U. Smith, Class of 1966, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior student in good standing. Preference is given to African American students.

Established by Dr. Richard E. Smith, Class of 1976, this scholarship is awarded to a student from Michigan who excels academically in women’s health and ranks in the top 25% of the class.

Established by Timothy L. Stephens Jr., MD, Class of 1961, in memory of his wife, Consuelo M. Sousa, MD, Class of 1958, this scholarship is awarded to an African American woman who demonstrates dedication to both family and medicine.

Established by Dr. Jitendra Swarup, Class of 1991, in honor of his mother, Suman Swarup, this scholarship is awarded to a junior student with financial need who ranked in the top 50% during the freshman and sophomore years and demonstrates the humanitarian and academic qualities of HUCM.

Given in memory of Dr. and Mrs. August C. Terrence, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving medical student, with preference given to a Louisiana resident.

Awarded in honor of Dr. John Townsend, this scholarship is for a student in good standing with financial need. Preference is given to a student interested in endocrinology.

Established by Charles J. Trotman, MD, MBA, Class of 1966, in memory of his parents, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in the upper quartile of the class. Preference is given to students born and raised in Alabama or graduates of Morehouse College or Spelman College.

Established by Kurt Vernon, MD, Class of 1990, and his wife, Kia Vernon, this scholarship is awarded to a student with financial need, with preference given to HBCU graduates.

Established by the children of Thaddeus and DeLoris Watson in memory of their parents, this scholarship is awarded to a first- or second-year medical student with financial need who is the child of a civil servant or nurse. A student may receive this scholarship only once.

Established by Dr. Ouida E. Westney and their children in honor of Dr. Lennox S. Westney, Class of 1961, this scholarship is awarded to a third- or fourth-year medical student with financial need and good academic standing. Preference is given to students interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology or graduates of Oakwood University or Washington Adventist University.

Established by Anthony C. Pickett, MD, Class of 1991, in memory of George Williams, this scholarship is awarded to a high-ranking second-year student born and raised in California whose heritage and background foster continued ties to the African American community.

Established by Dr. John T. Williams Sr., Class of 1964, and Mrs. Myrtle J. Williams, this scholarship is awarded to an African American medical student in good academic standing who has financial need.
